Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, Post Credit scene and what it means.

First of all, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is a blast. It’s such a refreshing and all round brilliant film that anyone who has the slightest interest in Spider-Man needs to watch. It’s clear to see that this film is not just going to be a one off, Sony are already working on a sequel and the after credit scene gives us a glimpse at what could be in store.

The movie includes an already decent handful of spider-men from different dimensions and after the credits we are given one more. One from the very far future, Miguel O’Hara who is otherwise known as Spider-Man 2099. Miguel lives in Nueva York (New York City in the year 2099), he begins as a disgruntled geneticist working for Tyler Stone who is the head of Alchemax, a company hugely prominent throughout the Spider-verse. This company would test on subjects in an attempt to give humans superpowers, these tests were in fact lethal to its subjects. Miguel disagreed with what was happening at Alchemax so confronted his boss in an attempt to stop the tests, Instead Tyler Stone drugged Miguel, so in attempt to cure himself he tried changing his DNA however was left with 50% DNA of a spider. And there we (sort of) have it, Spider-Man 2099 is born.

During the after credit scene we see Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) talking to his holographic assistant Lyla (Greta Lee), they’re monitoring the Spider-verse and the events that unfolded in the film. We then see that they have successfully created a watch like ‘goober/gismo’ which can be used to travel from universe to universe. Miguel then decides to travel to Earth 67, and encounters another spider-man and it’s the one from the 1967 cartoon, the episode where the famous pointing meme was born. The pair share a brief exchange of arguing who pointed first and in all fairness the scene is brilliantly done and quite hilarious. It’s a very rare example of a studio referencing a meme without being absolutely cringe.

It’s very clear that Sony have some bold and exciting ideas in the works for the next film and I can guarantee that Spider-Man 2099 will have a big part to play, they already have Oscar Isaac voicing the character so it would be a complete waste to not use and expand on the character. We can obviously expect plenty of dimensional jumping in the next film and it’s likely Sony will take it to the next level and Miles Morales may be the one doing the jumping. To see Miles exploring different universes and meeting other Spider-Men is an opportunity that I very much doubt Sony will let slip. This is all obviously my personal predictions so we can only wait to see but I’m betting on it. There are also rumours that the sequel may be based around the Spider-Geddon comic event which is currently running. If true, the likely big threat will be the super-villain group called The Inheritors who hunt down and kill Spider-men and feed on their ‘life-force’. It’s all up in the air right now at what could be next and we’re also unsure on when the sequel shall arrive, hopefully not too long of a wait.

With all comic book based films there are always plenty of theories and speculations around what could be next and I don’t see that as a negative, it brings people together, creates a community and it develops a discussion and thats a huge reason as to why people love it so much. At the end of the day all we can do is wait, re-watch the film at least 10 times, create theories, speculate even more and whatever needs to be done, just to pass the time.
