With stunning new Film releases such as Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, it’s looking like there are new standards for the world of animation. So the real question here is: does How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World meet the new standard?
Did We Enjoy It?
What can I say? This was the perfect send off to one of our favourite movies growing up. It was always going to be difficult to top the original How To Train your Dragon, but this was such a wonderful ending to a wonderful story and yes. We sure a hell enjoyed it.
Like Into The Spider-Verse, (you can read our article about this film and it’s post credit scene), this Film in no way feels watered down for children. It’s big and bold just like any other great live-action you’ve seen. The film is still genuinely funny, yet mature. The film has grown up just like it’s audience has, introducing more complex themes of life and hard truths.
Visually stunning. We were amazed at the attention to detail, I mean you can see the characters have AGED (as you will see in the montage in the credits), the dragon scales and even the softness of hair. Some scenes are breathtaking. The films have visually evolved significantly since the original and it SHOWS.
Will You Enjoy It?
I’ve watched these films from the age of 12 and seeing Hiccup and Toothless get their full character arc is so satisfying (not to mention EMOTIONAL). Their journey was such a fun, emotional ride with great adventures and even greater characters. It’s all over now and the way they tied everything together into a heartfelt little bow was amazing. It’s not the perfect film, but if you’ve stuck around for the trilogy, then it definitely will feel like it to you. Your 12 year old self would be sobbing. I’m not gonna lie, my 20 year old self did.
