Netflix: Russian Doll – Honest Review

Gotta get up, gotta get out, gotta get home before the morning comes.

Did We Enjoy The Series?

Netflix’s version of Groundhog day? That’s what I thought. Same premise, but so much deeper. This LITERALLY came from LESLEY KNOPE. Created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler (Knope) and Leslye Headland, Russian doll is one of the most unique series i’ve ever seen. After the first episode, (which are nicely only 30 minutes long) we were just instantly pulled into Nadia’s past, conflicts and her bleak outlook on life. Although the trailer foreshadows some of what happens, the series still manages to keep you playing that guessing game, right up to the end. The series has a large appreciation for art and music, with it’s enjoyable soundtrack (which it needed to be considering this would loop and loop and loop) and artistic cinematography, with some scenes soaked in neon.

The Story

This starts off as a comedy, but then turns into something dark and emotional. Excellently written, it’s achieves what Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch tried to achieve. Similar to Bandersnatch, Nadia programs games and ironically whilst she’s in ‘the loop’ she is presented with many different directions, before ultimately dying. This works along with the linear narrative that gives a much greater sense of adventure and that other people and things can also be implicated in this and can choose which way the story goes.

The Acting

Some of you will know Natasha Lyonne as Nicky from Orange Is The New Black and if you liked her in that, you will adore her after this. She charms with witt and dark humour whilst also encapsulating the deep psychological pain her character is going through.

Will You Enjoy It?

This is an obvious binge watch option for you guys. Every aspect is so different and amazing. Lyonne absolutely kills it. Literally. Yet another Netflix original that didn’t disappoint.
