The Future Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Avengers: Endgame hits theatres across the globe this April and will go down as the movie that brings the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe full circle. The MCU is changing and developing constantly with recent events meaning the cinematic universe we know and love is set to change more than ever before. So here are some MCU updates that are worth knowing.

The Infinity Saga:

The first three phases of the MCU have been labelled by Kevin Feige himself as the ‘Infinity Saga’. Meaning all 22 movies from Iron man all the way back in 2008 up to Avengers: Endgame in 2019 are all part of the so called Infinity Saga. Naming the first three phases of the MCU the Infinity Saga felt necessary to bring 22 movies spread out over a decade to a somewhat conclusion. “Harry Potter had an ending because there were only so many books. Lord of the Rings too. But we thought, 22 movies in, wouldn’t it be fun to bring some finality to the story-line.” Kevin Feige explained. This in itself gets us more excited for when Avengers: Endgame hits theatres April 26th as it truly will be the big conclusion for these characters and stories that we have been watching develop over 11 years.

Confirmed Marvel Movies on the way:

Many Marvel movies are being planned for the next phase of the MCU, Black Panther and Spider-man sequels are confirmed and we also have a highly anticipated Black Widow movie in the works. A Shang-Chi movie is also being planned and will be the first martial arts movie in the MCU, it will also feature an asian protagonist as the lead. The Eternals are also heading to the MCU and are likely to be the lead for the more cosmic/space related side of the MCU as it moves forward after Endgame. The Eternals will be based on Jack Kirby’s comic series, they are a set of powerful beings who have existed for millions of years who look human but have super strength and powers that set them apart from your average human being. They are fighting a never-ending war against their genetic cousins who are fighting against The Eternals quest for peace. This leaves the MCU open to a very exciting storyline and movie that can be expanded and developed on.

James Gunn returning for Guardians Of The Galaxy 3:

Our prayers were answered. James Gunn is returning to the MCU to finish what he started and direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn was fired by Disney after some dodgy tweets surfaced online and while Disney seemed certain on their decision, they were swayed by Gunn’s public apology and how he dealt with the entire situation that they decided to reinstate him to direct GOTG 3. This is huge news as the future of the Guardians was uncertain after Feige stated that developing the movie wasn’t a priority. However, the movie is still looking to not start production until 2021 due to Gunn working on DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ movie. So while a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie won’t be hitting theatres for quite a while at least we can sleep well at night knowing the Guardians are in safe hands.

Disney/Fox merger deal completed:

It’s done, Disney now own 21st Century Fox and their assets. After years in the works the deal was finally completed, a deal that has divided opinions among many fans. In terms of how this affects the MCU however, it’s very exciting. Before this deal characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom were owned by Fox, meaning they were unable to join the MCU. Now that’s changed we can expect to see these characters team up with others we know and already love in the MCU like Spider-Man for example. This leaves the future of the MCU in a very exciting position with a bundle of characters joining the big screen at some point in the future. It’s reported this won’t be until 2021 at the earliest however due to needing enough to time to produce and plan how the movies will connect with one another.

A Promising Future:

With the Infinity Saga coming to an end this April and new movies to follow, James Gunn returning to direct the third Guardians Of The Galaxy movie and characters like Fantastic 4 and X-men ready to join the rest of the heroes; The future of MCU may be in the most promising position that it has been since its beginning. For now though, we can only wait and see how all of this unfolds as things don’t always go to plan so it’s likely things may change along the way, it’s all exciting nonetheless. We can’t wait to see it all unfold.
