2019 has already been a big year for cinema and after the emotional rollercoaster and heartbreak that was Avengers Endgame, you’re probably wondering whats next. May is shaping up to be an exciting month for movies, James Gunn has a ‘superhero horror film’ coming, there’s a movie about gigantic battling monsters, another Disney live-action remake on the way, a new John Wick movie and to top it off a live-action Pokemon movie. What more could you ask for?
Detective Pikachu – May 10th
What it’s about: In a world where Pokemon roam free: Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu.
What we think: Well it looks like the Pokemon Cinematic Universe is beginning to develop before our very own eyes, and I think we’re ok with that? It will be really interesting to see how this movie and it’s essential world-building turns out. Aside from the Pokemon, action and the battles: We’re sure this film will be full of heart and have characters that we can fall in love with. If you’re looking to watch something different or you’re even just slightly interested in Pokemon, this is the movie for you. Oh and Ryan Reynolds.
John Wick Chapter 3 – 17th May
What it’s about: Legendary hit man John Wick must fight his way out of New York when a $14 million contract on his life makes him the target of the world’s top assassins.
What we think: The John Wick movies are loved by pretty much everyone. We all know what to expect with a John Wick movie: there will be a tonne of action, explosions, chase scenes and dogs. If you love a good action movie and/or you’re a John Wick fan, then get yourself to the cinema.
Aladdin – 24th May
What it’s about: A live-action re-make of the Disney classic: young Aladdin embarks on a magical adventure after finding a lamp that releases a wisecracking genie.
What we think: After the horror of what was Will Smith’s genie, we had very low expectations for this movie. However, the latest trailers and a better look at Genie has given us high hopes for this movie. It’s one for the kids and adults alike and we’re excited to see how Disney pull this one off.
Brightburn – 24th May
What it’s about: What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
What we think: A Superhero Horror movie, now that’s going to be interesting. Brightburn looks like it’s going to be a very fresh take on the horror genre so we’re excited to see how it turns out. Horror fans, this is your movie to see this month. Oh and it’s directed by Guardians Of The Galaxy’s James Gunn.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters – 31st May
What it’s about: Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.
What we think: This movie could either do well or ends up simply terrible, either way we’re excited to see Godzilla back on our screens and this time he’s going to be battling even bigger and weirder monsters. What could be better than that?
