Highly anticipated Netflix mini-series HOLLYWOOD has dropped, 7 dramatic episodes following a group of aspiring actors, writers and directors in post-WW2 Hollywood trying to make it big no matter the cost.

Despite harsh critics ratings and Rotten Tomatoes scores, Ryan Murphy’s HOLLYWOOD is a series that is very much easy to enjoy.

The show comes off a little naive, but this doesn’t take away from the overall great message the show is trying to push. Once you get past how they got their shot in a toxic Hollywood industry, the show begins to explore how the opportunities gained and sacrifices made start to playout for the good of society as a whole.

An Alternate History

Similar to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, HOLLYWOOD is a tale of an alternate reality that provides some justice and respect to the aspiring actresses, actors, writers and directors that come from marginalised, minority groups. People that were harshly treated and extremely underrepresented throughout the entire industry.

Here’s what writer and director Janet Mock has said about the Netflix series:

“With the present so fraught and the future uncertain, we turned to the past for direction, uncovering buried history to spin an aspirational tale of what ifs: What if a band of outsiders were given a chance to tell their own story? What if the person with greenlight power was a woman? The screenwriter a black man? What if the heroine was a woman of colour? The matinee idol openly gay? And what if they were all invited into the room where the decisions are made, entering fully and unapologetically themselves to leave victorious and vaunted, their place in history cemented. Hollywood is a love letter to our little industry town where dreamers dwell, stars are born, and magic transcends reality.”

Why It’s a Great Watch

The miniseries is a great demonstration of what could be. How high the film industry could soar if marginalised groups in society were given a shot as well as the positive impact that would have on others and society as a whole. HOLLYWOOD shows the stark reality of ‘The American Dream’ which has always been a flawed concept that many still to this day buy into.

It doesn’t glorify the era, rather shines a light on its factual flaws. The show highlights the racism, homophobia and sexism that shut out marginalized talent for decades — but this wasn’t enough to stop the stars of this Netflix show. The authentic acting is enough to glue you to the screen and watch this all in one.

Hollywood is recreated with glamourous recreations of LA hotspots and parties providing the ‘dreamy’ backdrop that only heightens the heartbreak that the characters endure.

Is it Worth the Watch?

The miniseries doesn’t shy away from the double standards that Hollywood had at the time. Hollywood is a spectacular combination of Alternate History and real events and by the end of it you’ll find yourself really rooting for each character, even the ones who often make the wrong decisions.

The series certainly won us over. It’s not the best series out there right now but its entertaining, emotional and packed with heart. If you’re looking for something to give you goosebumps, put a smile on your face and maybe shed a tear. Then this is the series for you.
